✶ What Medicaid and TennCare Are

Medicaid is a federal program. TennCare is Tennessee’s version of Medicaid. They work together, but TennCare has its own rules, its own paperwork, and its own way of doing things.

In Tennessee, Medicaid is harder to get than in many other states because Tennessee did not expand Medicaid. This means fewer people qualify and the income limits are lower.

✶ Who Qualifies

TennCare has several categories. You only need to fit one. The most common categories for disabled people are:

  • SSI recipients (automatic TennCare)
  • Disabled adults with very low income
  • Medically frail adults
  • Adults in long term care programs
  • Adults with certain chronic conditions

If you receive SSI, you automatically get TennCare. If you receive SSDI, you may or may not qualify depending on income and household size.

✶ How to Apply

You can apply online, by phone, or in person. Online is usually the fastest, but not always the easiest.

You will need:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of income
  • Medical information if applying as medically frail
  • Social Security number
  • Household information

You do not need to upload every medical record you have. You only need enough to show that your condition affects your daily life.

✶ The Medically Frail Category

Medically frail is one of the most important categories for disabled adults. It covers people with serious health conditions, chronic illnesses, or disabilities that limit daily activities.

TennCare uses medically frail status to determine whether you need enhanced benefits or additional support services.

TennCare may ask for:

  • A doctor’s letter describing your limitations
  • Recent medical records
  • A list of functional limitations (walking, standing, bathing, cooking, etc.)
  • Proof of chronic conditions

You do not need a perfect letter. You need a clear one. Plain language works better than medical jargon.

✶ TennCare Assets and Resources

TennCare has resource limits for some categories, especially SSI‑related Medicaid. Here are the basics:

  • Resource limit: $2,000 for an individual
  • Exempt: Your home, one vehicle, personal belongings
  • Countable: Savings accounts, some life insurance, extra vehicles

TennCare does not count SSDI backpay as income in the month you receive it, but they may count it as a resource later. If you get a large backpay, call TennCare Connect immediately.

✶ How to Submit Documents Without Losing Your Mind

TennCare Connect is notorious for losing documents. Here’s how to protect yourself:

  • Upload documents online and take screenshots of the confirmation
  • Write the date on every document you submit
  • Call TennCare Connect 3–5 days later to confirm they received it
  • Keep a folder with all your submissions
  • Never mail originals — only copies

Following these steps prevents most accidental closures.

✶ Renewals and Redeterminations

TennCare requires regular renewals. They may ask for updated income information, updated medical documentation, or proof that your condition has not changed.

If you miss a renewal deadline, TennCare may close your case. You can reapply, but it may interrupt your coverage.

✶ If You Are Denied

TennCare denials are common. They do not mean you are not disabled. They usually mean the paperwork did not match what TennCare needed.

  • Read the denial letter carefully
  • Submit an appeal quickly
  • Ask your doctor for a support letter
  • Provide updated medical records
  • Call TennCare Connect for clarification

You can appeal more than once. Many people are approved on appeal.
